Limer inn mitt siste bidrag fra After Hours.

Sixto Peralta like så.

Holder til i East Anglia, jordbruksområdet no.1 i England. Ikke langt over til b.l.a Nederland;..kanskje derfor at klubben ofte har brukt nederlendere; men; billige sådanne, da ressursene har vært begrenset. Tok sitt eneste mesterskap i ligasammenheng sesongen 61/62 under sir Alf Ramsey. FA cup tittel i 78, etter å ha slått Arsenal fortjent 1-0. UEFA cup tittel i 81/82.

DERBY COUNTY 1, IPSWICH TOWN 3
Two penalties missed and a four goal thrilling second half saw Ipswich take the vital three points at Pride Park.

Town manager George Burley recalled his leading marksman Marcus Stewart to the starting line up at Pride Park this afternoon. It was the player’s first Premier league start for the Blues since the defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge back in November of last year.

Keeper Andy Marshall retained his place between the sticks with Italian stopper Sereni on the bench in what has become a much longer ‘rest’ than he had expected. Peralta took the place of the injured Magilton in midfield Ipswich Town’s in Burley’s preferred 4-4-2 formation.

Derby kicked off the match with Town attacking the goal in front of the travelling fans of almost four thousand. From the start it was George Burley’s side that took the game by the scruff of the neck with Peralta and Hriedarsson seeing early efforts break down in the county box.

With 6 minutes on the clock Derby countered with number 6 Simo Valakari raiding down the right flank, evading the challenge of Hriedarsson he whipped a ball into the box which Marshall took comfortably under pressure from Ravenelli. After early nerves the home side under the temporary control of Billy McEwan settled and attacked Ipswich with mounting regularity. Jackson saw a powerfully delivered ball into the box headed out at the far post by Makin and minutes later Zavagno delivered a perfect ball into the path of Burton, the County striker firing over the bar.

Town countered and have seen good use of the full backs in their attacking play, Makin involved in a move that should have seen the visitors take the lead. The right-sided Makin creating space with some good work well into the Derby half, his precision ball curled into the box, over the head of Stewart but met by Reuser, who knows he should have done better than head over the bar.

Christie has looked lively in the first period with a goof effort half way through that screamed over Marshall’s bar from 25 yards.

The game should have opened up for Town 6 minutes before the break. Carbonari harshly judged to have been leaning down on Bent in the box, Paul Durkin immediately pointing to the penalty spot.

Stewart immediately picked up the ball, looking for his 10th goal of the season, but his effort struck the foot of the right hand post with keeper Oakes at full stretch, the striker himself suggesting that Oakes had finger-tipped it onto the upright.

The miss lifted County who piled the pressure on their visitors to the whistle but at the break in was honours even.

Half time 0-0

Within a minute of the restart it was advantage Ipswich. A looping ball over the top of the Derby defence saw Marcus Bent get the better of Higginbotham, take the ball wide right in the box and powerfully fire home.

But any Town joy was short-lived within a minute Derby had the chance to equalise when Mark Venus was adjudged to have held down Ravenelli in the area, the Italian striker using all his experience to influence referee Durkin. Burton, who had looked sharp throughout the first half stepped forward but in truth never looked confident of scoring.

His right foot shot well saved by Andy Marshall at full stretch to his right.

County applied more pressure on the Ipswich half, but the central defensive pairing of McGreal and Venus staying strong despite good efforts from long range by Christie, Burton and Higginbotham.

With 66 minutes on the clock, Burley’s side stretched their lead. Bent, who improves it seems in every game he’s played for the ‘Blues’, beating the offside trap wide right, slipping past his marker to deliver an inch perfect ball in the path of Sixto Peralta for the Argentine midfielder to poke home from close range.

The second Ipswich finish caused Derby fans to call for the head of the and board. Their chant did nothing for McEwan’s players who struggled to raise their heads, but for a move 12 minutes from time.

Ravenelli slipped in front of McGreal on the right side of the Town box and delivered a sweet ball onto the head of Malcolm Christie to finish from 6 yards. Hope for County, but short-lived.

With just 4 minutes to go George Burley looked to replace Reuser with Clapham. To the displeasure of the Ipswich boss, referee Durkin missed the indication. Ipswich were finishing on a high with the tireless running of Bent causing problems for the home defence all afternoon, this time the big striker found the Dutchman who fired home from 20 yards. Three, one to Town, Reuser was immediately replaced by Clapham and received a huge touchline hug from his manager.
Final score:

Ipswich Town - Man City...Søndag kl 20,00

Er redd at videre cupdeltagelse vil gå ut over ligaen.

IPSWICH TOWN 1, MANCHESTER CITY 4
Ipswich's poor recent record in the FA Cup continued after First Division
leaders Manchester City hammered them 4-1 at Portman Road on Sunday night.

Town haven't reached the Fifth Round of the competition since the 1995-96 season, and this year will be no different after Kevin Keegan's team
destroyed Ipswich with a skillful display of attacking, passing football.

Ipswich had their moments in the first half before falling 1-0 down to Eyal Berkovic's excellent volley. City dominated after the break and went close several times before Shaun Goater made it 2-0 on 65 minutes.

Town hit back through Marcus Bent to set up a grandstand finish with seven minutes left, but City raised it another gear and hit two more through Goater again and Darren Huckerby to seal an away tie at Newcastle in round five.

FIRST HALF:

Ipswich boss George Burley was forced to make two changes from the side which won 3-1 at Derby last weekend - 'flu victim Chris Makin replaced by Fabian Wilnis and Titus Bramble in for Mark Venus, who had a knee injury.

Manchester City started brightly with some neat passing and it took a good Hermann Hreidarsson interception to stop an Eyal Berkovic pass reaching Shaun Wright-Phillips in a dangerous position.

Ipswich's first threat on five minutes saw boyhood Manchester United fan Matt Holland have a drive charged down by Stuart Pearce, before play switched to the other end where Darren Huckerby broke clear to have a low shot well saved by the diving Andy Marshall.

Town had a great chance on eight minutes when Sixto Peralta and Jermaine Wright worked a 1-2, with Peralta pulling the ball back for Marcus Bent to shoot narrowly over from an angle.

Richard Dunne shot over after a free-kick routine for City, before Marcus Stewart shot well wide for Ipswich and then Wright-Phillips was equally off target at the other end from an Ali Benarbia pass.

Dunne was booked for a late challenge on Bent close to the corner flag, but Martijn Reuser's free-kick was cleared with some ease by the visitors.

Town's Dutch winger then had two great chances to score, first clipping a shot wide when put through by a superb Stewart reverse pass, and then seeing his header from Bent's far post cross well saved by Nicky Weaver.

Ipswich were getting on top and Weaver had to deny Matt Holland with his feet at the near post after Bent and Peralta had combined to set up him right of the goal. The corner was cleared out to Peralta 25 yards from goal, but his volley flew well wide.

Marshall did well to cut out a low Shaun Goater cross after he got in
behind Bramble and then the Town 'keeper was quickly off his line to deny Huckerby as he chased onto a Benarbia through ball.

City took the lead on 43 minutes, with a superb strike from Israeli
international Berkovic, but the goal had a big slice of controversy about
it, as referee Graeme Poll awarded the visitors a corner after Benarbia's
cross went out off team-mate Niclas Jensen.

The kick was played to Berkovic on the edge of the box and his swerving volley found the corner of the net - Marshall's fingertip touch just taking it away from Reuser who was poised to head clear from off the line.

SECOND HALF:

There were no changes at half-time and it was City who began the brighter, obviously buoyed by their one-goal lead and they came close on three separate occasions to extending their lead.

First McGreal did well to clear a dangerous Wright-Phillips cut-back as
Huckerby waited to bounce, then Marshall blocked from Goater and Bramble cleared the follow-up by Huckerby and Huckerby again had a chance when he headed wide when he met Pearce's cross unmarked.

Burley responded by replacing Reuser with Clapham on 53 minutes and for a while the game was more even, with both sides cancelling each other out.

Town suffered a body-blow on 65 minutes when Wright's pass was intercepted by Jensen who led a swift breakaway. His pass found Benarbia, who slipped it through for Goater to fire an angled shot across Marshall and in.

Ipswich immediately brought on Alun Armstrong for Wilnis and played with three up front, but it was City who continued to threaten.

McGreal's clearance only found Berkovic on the edge of the box and he
volleyed over before Marshall had to dive at the feet of Wright-Phillips
after Benarbia played another skillful through ball.

Town then got the bit between their teeth and Clapham volleyed wide from a Stewart knock-down, before Bent's superb defence-splitting pass found Armstrong wide on the right but he blazed over.

A minute later and Town's luck on the night was perfectly summed up as
Peralta had a point-blank header brilliantly saved by Weaver, and Stewart then blazed the rebound against the bar from six yards.

Benarbia was booked for a farcical dive, before Ulrich Le Pen came on for Hreidarsson, making only his second appearance for Town having been injured on his debut against Bolton way back in mid-November.

Jensen shot not far off target from a Berkovic pass, before Bramble's tug back on Goater went unseen as he raced onto another Bernabia ball.

Ipswich gave themselves hope on 83 minutes when Stewart's lay-off found Bent and he curled a shot from 20 yards into the corner of the net for his sixth goal in six games, via a deflection off Pearce.

Bent then almost created an equaliser with a angled crossfield ball which
found Armstrong at the back post, but Weaver dived to tip away his header.

City then killed the game off with a

City then killed the game off with a.............. third goal four minutes from time.
Benarbia found Huckerby whose powerful drive was palmed into the air by Marshall only to fall perfectly for Goater to head into an open net.

To rub salt into the wounds, the visitors made it 4-1 in the final minute
when a long ball over the top saw Huckerby beat the offside trap, race in on Marshall, round the 'keeper and sidefoot into the net.

TEAM (played in 4-4-2 formation)
Marshall, Wilnis (sub Armstrong, 65 minutes) McGreal, Bramble, Hreidarsson
(sub Le Pen, 79 minutes), Wright, Peralta, Holland, Reuser (sub Clapham, 53 minutes), Stewart and M. Bent.

Attendance: 21,199.

Next home game: vs Fulham (Premiership) on Wednesday, 30th January. Kick-off 7.45pm.

IPSWICH 1, FULHAM 0
Marcus Bent continued his golden run of form with the only goal as Ipswich surged back out of the Premiership's relegation zone.

Bent finished off from close-range after ten minutes, and Town kept Fulham at bay for the rest of the match to earn another crucial three points.

After losing 4-1 at home to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Sunday and then being deposited back into the bottom three by Middlesbrough's surprise win at Sunderland on Tuesday, this result will give a real boost to all at Portman Road in the battle for survival.

FIRST HALF:

Ipswich boss George Burley made four changes to the side beaten by
Manchester City in the FA Cup, with Chris Makin, Mark Venus, Jamie Clapham and Alun Armstrong in for Fabian Wilnis, Titus Bramble, Martijn Reuser and Marcus Stewart respectively.

Both teams began by spraying the ball about nicely on a pitch greased up by rain but the first chance didn't arrive until the seventh minute when Edwin van der Sar saved a Marcus Bent header from a Venus free kick.

The Dutch 'keeper was beaten though by Bent on ten minutes as Town went ahead with the recent capture from Blackburn netting his seventh goal of the game.

Town broke quickly with Sixto Peralta playing the ball to Armstrong down the left. He raced into the box and when his shot was deflected by Zat Knight, it looped up for Bent to knock it in from a yard out.

Fulham were furious, believing the goal was offside, but replays appeared to show that referee Alan Wiley and his assistant had got the decision right.

Fulham could have levelled on 18 minutes when Steed Malbranque played in Louis Saha, but as he tried to wrong-foot Makin, the defender shepherded the ball back to Andy Marshall.

A sliced Venus clearance had to be helped behind by Venus and from the corner by Sylvain Legwinski, Malbranque rose highest but headed well over.

Town had appeals for a penalty turned down as Bent and Rufus Brevett went shoulder-to-shoulder in a chase for an Armstrong pass, but it appeared a fair challenge by the defender.

Alain Goma was booked for a tackle from behind on Bent but from the
free-kick Fulham broke away with Steve Marlet playing in Legwinski but his shot was straight at Marshall, who gathered at the second attempt.

Town should have made it 2-0 on 35 minutes when Bent won a corner, Venus whipped it in to the far post where McGreal was unmarked but directed his header past the post.

Bent then had a header held at full stretch by van der Sar after a Hermann Hreidarsson run and cross, and the final chance of the half came when Bent was fouled 22 yards out and an indirect free-kick was touched to Venus, but his shot was charged down by Marlet and away for a corner which came to nothing.

SECOND HALF:

Fulham boss Jean Tigana was obviously unhappy with his side's first half
performance as he made two changes at the interval, bringing on John
Collins and Barry Hayles for Knight and Bjarne Goldbaek respectively.

Ipswich though could have spoiled his hopes of a comeback inside 40 seconds of the second period when Bent laid the ball off to Matt Holland - in his 200th successive League appearance for the club - and he let fly with a strong shot from the edge of the area which wasn't far wide.

Fulham appealed for a penalty when Legwinski went to ground in a challenge with McGreal, but the Town defender timed it perfectly and took the ball cleanly.

There was danger for Town when Venus handled a Hayles flick in a central area 25 yards out, and was perhaps fortunate to escape a yellow card. Saha stepped up to take the free-kick but it was blocked by the wall.

McGreal was then booked for a bodycheck on Hayles and from the free-kick Collins sent in a curling effort which was bound for the bottom corner, only for Marshall to dive and push it behind for a corner. Before play restarted, Fulham sent on Abdeslam Ouaddou for Legwinski.

Town then replaced the hard-working Armstrong with Stewart and moments later Bent found Holland wide on the right, he cut inside a couple of challengers before seeing his shot charged down and deflected wide.

Marshall palmed away a dangerous Hayles cross as Marlet closed in on it before at the other end a Bent cross was missed by van der Sar and Clapham was just unable to reach it with an open goal beckoning.

Saha blazed well over for Fulham and then Wright's pass had just too much weight on it for Stewart, who would have been through. That proved to be Wright's last meaningful moment of the game, and he was replaced by Reuser with eight minutes remaining.

Steve Finnan earned himself a caution for arguing about a foul given
against Peralta and then van der Sar sunk to his knees to take a Holland
long-range shot.

Town had a great chance to ease the nerves of their fans with five minutes left when Bent found himself clear after a Peralta pass, but the former Dutch international van der Sar did well to race off his line and block with his leg.

Fulham's last chance came with three minutes to go when Malbranque juggled space for a shot just inside the box, but his final effort was charged down for a corner which Town cleared comfortably.

The majority of the remaining time - three minutes of normal time and three added on for stoppages - was played out deep in the Fulham half as Town made it six Premiership wins in the last seven outings.

TEAM (Played in 4-4-2 formation)
Marshall, Makin, McGreal, Venus, Hreidarsson, Wright (sub Reuser, 82
minutes), Holland, Peralta, Clapham, M. Bent and Armstrong (sub Stewart, 69 minutes).

Attendance: 25, 156 (another new all-seater record for Portman Road,
beating the 25,077 that saw the 2-1 win over Tottenham earlier this month).

J.McGreal står over grunnet gule kort katantene.
Helt bakerst spiller vel igjen Marshall i stedet for Sereni.

Forøvrig, se under ticker GOAL for å få reiseskildring (finnes under After Hours;...søk på ticker GOAL)

TOWN TOO STRONG FOR SMITH'S TOFFEE'S
Ipswich moved to 12th in the Premiership after a spirited performance at Goodison Park took George Burley's team above the immediate relegation zone.

An early advantage to Town when Argentine midfielder Sixto Peralta pounced to score his fifth goal of the season, a one-two with Clapham, the loanee from Inter-Milan again showing how he is blossoming into a player capable of matching the best in the Premiership to slot home.

Ipswich were looking comfortable on the ball, playing with a three man central defence who soaked up constant Everton pressure up front, particularly that from imposing striker, Duncan Fergusson.

Half way through the first period the home side equalised, Andy Marshall, who again started the game in the Town goal, pulling Kevin Campbell down in the box. The resulting penalty kick was fired away by David Unsworth, Marshall guessed correctly and flung himself to his left getting not-quite-enough of a hand onto the well-hit spot-kick.

Everton were bouyed by the goal, Fergusson denied by a wonderfull last ditch tackle from Venus.

It was the visitors who went into the break with the advantage through captain, Matt Holland.

A free-kick conceeded by Everton, the Town skipper blasting home from 25 yards after the ball was rolled into his path, Simonsen was left grasping air as the ball crashed into the top corner.

HALF TIME: Everton 1, Ipswich Town 2.

The break saw Jermaine Wright who picked up a groin injury after the Fulham match, replaced by Jim Magilton. Everton made one change, Clarke replaced by new signing Linderoth.

The second half saw Everton push to regain the advantage, efforts from Fergusson, Lindroth and Cascoigne threatened the Ipswich goal but George Burley's team stood firm to clock up their 7th win in 8 league matches to the delight of the manager, " I thought we showed a great deal of courage, we've won the bread and butter games against Fulham and now Everton and pulled ourselves away from the immediate relegation zone and must continue to show that characture right through to the end of the season."

FULL TIME: Everton 1, Ipswich Town 2.

It is now 7 Premiership wins from 8 games for Ipswich who have dramatically risen to 12th place, 5 points clear of the bottom three. This was never a pretty game, but Town showed just how to defend in difficult conditions and struck with two clinical finishes.

Town were unchanged with Jermaine Wright and Alun Armstrong both passing fitness tests, while Everton made three changes including the return of the enigmatic Paul Gascoigne. Ipswich started the game just a point behind Everton who were three places above them.

On an overcast and very windy day on Merseyside Ipswich started with a three at the back system, Hreidarsson operating in the middle of McGreal and Venus.

It was a rather uneasy opening from both sides but gradually Ipswich began to impose their passing game and they got their reward after 10 minutes. Sixto Peralta passed to Clapham on the left and was in the right position just inside the penalty area as the return low ball came in, to perfectly place a first time finish into the top corner.

Everton were strong and tried to hit back with Campbell getting the ball into Town’s net, but he was well offside. Ipswich though were generally well on top. Armstrong’s low drive was saved by the diving Sorensen and Wright hit a fine 25 yard volley six inches too high.

In the 27th minute, against the run of play, Everton levelled. A long cross was flicked on by Ferguson and as Campbell tried to latch onto it, Marshall dashed out. Minimal contact was made but referee Dunn pointed to the penalty spot. Marshall got a hand to Unsworth’s spot kick but could not stop it.

For ten minutes, Ipswich came under pressure from a re-vitalised Everton, but weathered the storm. In the 44th minute, Bent was brought down five yards outside the Everton area, just to the left of the goal and Clapham touched the ball for Matt Holland to rifle a right foot rocket beyond Sorensen who could hardly have seen it.

At half time Town made a change. Wright was feeling his groin injury so Magilton replaced him. Everton brought on their new signing Linderoth for Clarke.

With the wind behind them, Everton launched a serial assault. A volley by Ferguson was well saved by Marshall, but it was as near as the home side got to an equaliser. Stewart came on for Armstrong in the 56th minute, but Town were finding it hard to get the ball up to their front men.

At the back though McGreal, Hreidarsson and Venus were giants showing bravery, timely interceptions and strong tackles, although Ferguson was still a bit of a menace in the air. Marshall had two more saves to make but they were relatively comfortable from Linderoth and the ineffective Gascoigne.

In a rare raid, Town had penalty claims for handball against Gemmill turned down, and they thoroughly deserved the three points with the back three, Chris Makin and Matt Holland enjoying outstanding games.

Ipswich crashed to a record home Premiership defeat as Liverpool made a
mockery of the recent run from George Burley's team.

The Reds showed why they are fast emerging as one of the main challengers
for the title with a devastating display of counter-attacking football and
clinical finishing.

There was a bit of luck about Abel Xavier's deflected early goal, but the
visitors swept all before them after that as England strikers Emile Heskey
and Michael Owen scored twice apiece, and even central defender Sami Hyypia
struck a rare goal.

This was the worst possible result for Ipswich ahead of their lengthy
forthcoming break - their next match not being until March 2nd - and they
must now hope to not lose too much ground on their rivals for the drop in
the next few weeks.

Ipswich boss George Burley named an unchanged team for this game, which was
by far the biggest test since the run of seven wins in eight games which
has catapulted the side from bottom to 12th place.

Liverpool were the first to threaten when a good passing move ended with
Danny Murphy trying a chip which Andy Marshall had to back-pedal to palm
over the bar.

Town's first effort came on seven minutes when Marcus Bent was fouled 35
yards from goal, but the free-kick from Mark Venus was calmly gathered by
Jerzy Dudek.

Marshall did well to clear a Steven Gerrard pass as Emile Heskey chased it,
then raced off his line to block Murphy after Heskey put Murphy in. The
Town 'keeper excelled again with his awareness to boot clear as Michael
Owen chased a long Sami Hyypia pass.

Jamie Clapham saw a long-range shot charged down and Liverpool broke from
the rebound as John Arne Riise fed the ball in to Heskey whose shot was
blocked away for a corner by the knees of Marshall.

Town cleared that one, but from their next corner the visitors went ahead
on 16 minutes. Marshall came but failed to gather, Gerrard hooked it back
and debutant Abel Xavier's shot deflected off the boot of Chris Makin,
giving Marshall no chance.

Ipswich tried to hit back with Bent sending a header from Hermann
Hreidarsson's cross straight at Dudek before Sixto Peralta worked himself
some space just inside the box, and Dudek had to make a superb fingertip
save to push away his angled shot.

John McGreal did well to clear a Heskey pass which Owen was primed to run
onto and then another swift Liverpool break ended when Gerrard blazed over
from an angle.

Marshall comfortably saved a long-range Heskey shot before the England
forward shot into the side-netting from Xavier's ball in.

Gerrard sidefooted weakly at Marshall after a corner fell loose to him,
before Town were forced into a change when Jermaine Wright, who had caught
a high boot from namesake Stephen earlier, limped off on 38 minutes, with
Marcus Stewart his replacement.

Hreidarsson headed a Peralta corner behind before Liverpool scored a
crucial second on the break just two minutes before the break. Clapham's
poor ball was intercepted by Hyypia and played instantly forward by Gerrard
to Heskey who burst into the box and fired left-footed across Marshall and
in.

Matt Holland sent a volley over from the edge of the box after a Peralta
corner was cleared to him, and then in the extra minute of stoppage time,
Stewart got a boot to an Alun Armstrong flick, but Dudek saved with ease.

There were no changes at half-time and straight away Liverpool began in the
same vein, with Marshall having to race out to boot clear from Owen who had
been released by Heskey's pass.

Armstrong headed back a dangerous Clapham cross but Liverpool cleared
before Marshall twice in quick succession made good saves, first from
Owen's angled drive, and then to block Riise's run.

From the corner though Liverpool went 3-0 up as Hyypia raced in unmarked to
head powerfully down and into the net from six yards, despite the efforts
of Peralta on the goal-line.

Peralta had a shot blocked and then almost got on the end of a 1-2 with
Stewart before the unusual sight of Liverpool replacing their goalkeeper,
Dudek going off and Pegguy Arphexad coming on.

The match was becoming a rout on 62 minutes when another quick breakaway
ended with the ball in Town's net. Owen was the scorer this time from a
central position after Riise and Gerrard had combined to tee him up.

Heskey then went through onto a long ball, with Town appealing for offside,
but Hreidarsson did well to get back and deflect his shot away for a
corner.

It became 5-0 on 71 minutes when another good passing move ended with
Heskey feeding Owen and he accelerated beyond McGreal before firing across
Marshall and into the corner.

Town made a change with Jim Magilton on for Armstrong before Liverpool made
a second change with Nicolas Anelka taking Riise's place.

Marshall made a good save to deny Anelka who had burst through onto an Owen
pass before two volleys over the bar at either end - Murphy for Liverpool
and Holland for Town.

Gary McAllister replaced Gerrard as Liverpool showed no sign of easing off
the pedal, and only an excellent parry from Marshall denied Hyypia a second
goal, as he ghosted in unmarked onto Murphy's cross.

Magilton fired wide from Town's best chance of the half, and then in
stoppage time the visitors rubbed salt in the wounds as Anelka pulled the
ball back from the byline for Heskey who took time to aim and fire the ball
into the bottom corner.

TEAM (Played in 4-4-2 formation)
Marshall, Makin, McGreal, Venus, Hreidarsson, J. Wright (sub Stewart, 38
minutes), Peralta, Holland, Clapham, M. Bent and Armstrong (sub Magilton,
71 minutes).

IPSWICH TOWN 1, SOUTHAMPTON 3
Ipswich's relegation fears increased after a surprisingly lacklustre display saw them comfortably beaten 3-1 by fellow strugglers Southampton.

The visitors had the better of a poor first half and deserved their 2-0 lead given to them by a deflected Rory Delap strike and Brett Ormerod's first for his new club.

Town gave themselves hope with a late effort from Finidi George, in his first appearance for Ipswich since January 1st, but Man of the Match Chris Marsden sealed the points with a fine individual goal late on.

Ipswich made five changes from the side beaten 6-0 at home by Liverpool three weeks ago as Titus Bramble, Jim Magilton, Finidi George, Martijn Reuser and Marcus Stewart all came into the line-up.

Missing out were the suspended John McGreal, injured Sixto Peralta, while Jermaine Wright, Jamie Clapham and Alun Armstrong all dropped to the bench.

Southampton began brightly and won a corner inside the first 20 seconds, but it was cleared comfortably by Town, and that was all the excitement for the first ten minutes.

Neither side were really getting their passing going, although the visitors
had the better of the early possession before Marcus Bent won a corner
after charging down a Wayne Bridge clearance, but the kick by Mark Venus was knocked away.

The first half chance came on 18 minutes when Rory Delap got to the byline and pulled the ball back dangerously, with Andy Marshall diving to collect just ahead of Anders Svensson.

Town had a chance themselve at the other end immediately afterwards, when Reuser swept the ball low across the box towards Stewart, but Jones got there first, and although he didn't cleanly claim the ball, it was cleared by his defenders.

The first effort on target arrived on 24 minutes when Chris Makin was
adjudged to have fouled Brett Ormerod and Matt Oakley's curling free-kick from 25 yards was easily claimed by Marshall.

A low Stewart cross flew across the face of goal with neither Bent or
George able to reach it and then Jones dived smartly to claim a low George cross.

Jones then saved an angled Reuser shot with ease before Town had a lucky let-off when Bramble gave the ball away to Kevin Davies who fired in a low 20-yarder which Marshall spilled into the path of Delap, who fired low against the post and behind with the goal gaping.

Town stepped things up towards half-time with Reuser pulling a shot across from goal from a good position, Bent shooting straight at Jones and then looping a header over from a George cross, but in between Marsden cut in from the left wing past Makin, but shot over the bar from an angled position.

Southampton had a great chance to go in front inside the first minute of the second half when Venus' clearance was blocked by Davies who crossed low for the on-rushing Delap, who failed to connect from six yards out.

An angled cross from George was headed over by Hermann Hreidarsson before the visitors scored the opening goal on 52 minutes, although it owed a fair bit to good fortune.

Bramble fouled Davies on the angle of the area to concede a free-kick. It was tapped back to Delap who fired in a low shot which deflected in off Stewart, leaving Marshall with no chance.

Bent tried to hit back with a curling shot from Reuser's pass, but it was too close to Jones who saved with ease, and Town boss George Burley then made two changes, bringing on Jamie Clapham and Jermaine Wright for Reuser and Makin.

Town came close to an equaliser on the hour when Magilton's corner was knocked out to Holland, his volley back in was blocked to Bramble whose goalbound shot was booted clear.

That proved a crucial moment as a minute later Saints made it 2-0, Paul Telfer picking up a loose ball and threading it through for Ormerod to run on and slide home his first goal for the club, shooting across Marshall from an angle.

Town's response was a shot from Holland after Clapham had crossed, but again it was straight at Jones, and the game then entered a quiet spell as Southampton were happy to defend their lead.

It was inside the final 20 minutes before Ipswich threatened again, with Bramble miscueing an unmarked header from a Clapham free-kick, and then George headed a deep Magilton cross over the bar.

Holland fired wildly over after Bent and Stewart had combined to set him up on the edge of the box before both teams made a change - Pablo Counago on for Stewart for Ipswich while Southampton replaced Ormerod with Jo Tessem.

Town gave themselves a chance of a comeback with eight minutes left when a Venus corner was cleared to Holland whose volley fell loose to George and his stabbed effort just cleared the line before Paul Williams could clear, with the Saints man booked for disputing the decision.

Ipswich could have had a penalty with five minutes to go when Clapham and George combined with the latter having his shot charged down by the hands of Williams, but referee Mark Halsey obviously felt it was accidental.

Any chance of a home comeback was ended with two minutes remaining when Marsden scored a superb solo goal. Picking the ball up wide on the left he cut in past two defenders, glided past Marshall and sidefooted home into an open net.

TEAM: (Played in 4-4-2 formation) Marshall, Makin (sub Wright, 56 minutes), Bramble, Venus, Hreidarsson, George, Magilton, Holland, Reuser (sub Clapham, 56 minutes) Stewart (sub Counago, 77 minutes) and M. Bent.

Attendance: 25,440.

Next home game: vs Aston Villa (Premiership) on Saturday, 23rd March.
Kick-off 3pm.

ENDS.

Går i pluss uansett da.

LEEDS UNITED 2 V IPSWICH TOWN 0
Town line-up: Marshall, Wilnis, McGreal, Hreidarsson, Venus, Clapham, Magilton, Holland, George (Miller), Armstrong (Bent), Stewart (Counago)

Full-time: Town suffer their third successive Premiership defeat after a battling display at Elland Road. A controversial penalty decision sealed the home side's win after the Blues fought their way back into the game following Fowler's early second-half goal. The defence looked solid with McGreal outstanding and Hreidarsson making a great clearance off the line from Fowler's shot. Everton's defeat at West Ham leaves Town, Bolton and the Merseyside club locked on 30 points, one above third from bottom Blackburn.

92 mins: Venus lets fly from long range and Martyn is forced to make a great save.

90 mins: Two minutes of injury time to be played.

88 mins: Hreidrasson blocks Fowler shot on line after Leeds striker beats Marshall.

87 mins: Kelly gets behind Town defence to force a corner.

84 mins: Magilton pass for Counago goes through to Martyn.

83 mins: Tommy Miller replaces Finidi while Ferdinand receives treatment for an injury to his right ankle.

82 mins: Bent shot is blocked after Venus knock down. Leeds clear the danger.

80 mins: Wilnis picks up his second yellow card of the season, for a foul.

79 mins: Keane on for Leeds to replace Kewell.

78 mins: Counago and Bent come on to replace Stewart and Armstrong.

75 mins: Harte scores from penalty after Marshall is penalised for bringing down Smith. A controversial decision at first glance.

73 mins: Town subs are warming up with Bent perhaps a likely candidate to come on soon.

72 mins: The wind is continuing to make play difficult.

71 mins: Batty, in the book for an earlier foul, has been matched in midfield by Holland and Magilon.

70 mins: Marshall saves at the feet of Viduka and Hreidarsson clears the danger.

69 mins: Wilnis is struggling with an ankle injury.

68 mins: McGreal picks up his sixth booking of the season for a foul on Smith.

65 mins: Stewart knocks back to Magilton - shoots low and accurate - Martyn dives to save.

61 mins: Stewart and Armstrong link up to force a corner. Hreidarsson's header well saved by Leeds 'keeper Martyn.

57 mins: Armstrong's cross finds Matt Holland who knocks back to Magilton 25 yards out - shot deflected for a corner. Town showing a lot of spirit now with their best opportunity of the game so far.

46 mins: Fowler's shot escapes Marshall's dive and goes into the net after just 16 seconds of the second-half. Leeds 1 Town 0.

45 mins: Goalless at half-time with Town restricting Leeds to only two chances. The wind is making good football difficult and the home fans are showing signs of frustration. McGreal, Veno and Hreidarsson are defending very well and Marshall's save from Gary Kelly was first class. All to play for after the break.

40 mins: Holland and Finidi link up but the door is shut by a Kelly tackle.

39 mins: Leeds have targeted the left side of Town's defence for their main source of attack.

38 mins: Still little in the game but Town will have the wind in their favour after the interval.

35 mins: Kewell corner headed clear by Hreidarsson.

34 mins: Leeds pushing forward with Harte and Kelly throwing crosses in to the penalty area.

32 mins: Hreidarsson clears on the edge of the six yard box when Viduka looked certain to score.

30 mins: Kewell cross comfortably held by Marshall.

29 mins: Martyn puts the ball out for another corner and Armstrong heads just wide of the right hand post from the resultant set-piece.

28 mins: Harte clears for a corner after Magilton put Finidi through.

27 mins: Wilnis is impressing in his first appearance since the home defeat by Manchester City in the FA Cup.

25 mins: Marshall clears the ball outside his area as Viduka races through.

24 mins: The wind is making it hard for Marshall to get any distance with his goal kicks, with a gale blowing in his face.

23 mins: Leeds waste a free-kick on the edge of the Town box.

21 mins: McGreal in commanding form at the back for Town after returning to the side following his suspension against Southampton.

20 mins: Ferdinand covers the danger as Town play a long ball forward for Armstrong.

19 mins: Marshall hurls himself to his right to deny Kelly's low drive with Smith not connecting properly with the rebound.

17 mins: Fowler has the first shot on goal, trying to chip Marshall but the 'keeper saves comfortably.

16 mins: McGreal heads back to Marshall as Smith closes down on goal.

15 mins: Harry Kewell swings in the first corner of the game but Magilton clears easily.

14 mins: Holland competing well in midfield on his 250th appearances for Blues.

13 mins: Clapham pushing forward on the left where possible.

12 mins: Wilnis closing Kewell down at every opportunity but at the moment there has not been a clear shot on goal for either side.

8 mins: Town holding their own in midfield with Magilton and Holland getting plenty of the ball.

6 mins: Harte puts Fowler clear on the left but Venus covers the danger.

5 mins: Wilnis is playing as a more orthodox right-back.

4 mins: Ferdinand, recovered from a back injury, heads Stewart's cross away from the oncoming Armstrong.

2 mins: Stewart tries to get George in on goal but Matteo clears the danger.

Ipswich are playing a 3-5-2 formation with Wilnis and Clapham operating as wing-backs.

The pitch is very sandy and playing conditions are difficult because of a strong wind.

Town are playing in all blue.

BLACKBURN ROVERS 2 IPSWICH TOWN 1

Armstrong puts the ball in the net but it's offside

94: Final whistle. Blackburn 2 Town 1.
Rovers out of the bottom three as they jump ahead of Town. Bolton drop into the relegation zone. Rovers dominated the first-half with Duff a real problem for the Blues defence. Town were far better after the break and Stewart was sharp to score with glancing header. McGreal almost grabbed an equaliser in last minute but found the sidenetting as George Burley's side slipped to a fourth straight defeat in the Premiership.

93: Tugay goes through on goal but Hreidarsson forces him away for a corner.

92: Town piling forward and have dominated the second-half.

90: Stewart fouled. Makin free-kick cleared. Four minutes of injury time to be played.

88: Venus kick straight into the wall. McGreal hits the side netting from good chance.

87: Berg is booked for a foul on Peralta. Another free-kick on the edge of the box.

80: Blackburn making their third sub with Taylor on for Unsal.

79: Finidi comes on for Clapham.

77: Holland shot is blocked by the wall.

76: Free-kick to Town on edge of the penalty box. Clapham, Holland and Venus lining up kick.

75: Tugay long range strike is saved easily by Sereni.

70: Gillespie comes on for Dunn as Rovers make another sub.

68: Venus fires in a long range effort which tests Friedel.

65: Duff shot is blocked by Venus after Cole put him clear.

47: Scrappy start to the second-half with the whistle breaking up the play.

46: No changes to the line up at half-time.

45: Half-time. Rovers 2 Town 0. Town struggling to create chances and Holland's desperate attempt to get in on Wright's cross is as close as they have come. Cole showed his class with the second goal and Duff's strike was similar to Chris Marsden's for Southampton in their 3-1 win at Portman Road. George has much work to do at the break.

44: Holland goes close from a Wright cross.

43: GOAL - Cole scores after great work by Dunn. He spins and puts the ball past Sereni. Blackburn 2 Town 0.

16: Sereni produces a brilliant save from Unsal to keep the scores blank.

15: No clear chances yet as Dunn's snap shot is blocked by Clapham.

14: Stewart offside, then removes his black gloves.

Vanskelig å spå denne objektivt, men se opp for Ipswich i morgen.

status Newcastle: Klart beste laget, to feilaktige annuleringer

MATCH PREVIEW
Jermaine Wright will have a fitness test on Saturday morning after the groin strain that has troubled him for some time flared up again this week.

The Town midfielder has played in the last two Premiership games after being forced out of the squad for the visit to Leeds but has complained of the groin being sore at the end of games and training.

If Jamma does play, he will come up against the man who gave him a start in League football, Graham Taylor.

The former England national team boss signed Jermaine in his time in charge at Wolves after the Greenwich born player failed to break in to the first team at Millwall.

Town’s other injury worry is Sixto Peralta, who has missed training this week with a thigh injury.

The TXU Player of the Month for February is rated very doubtful for the game.

The Midlanders are hoping Juan Pablo Angel and Darius Vassell will be fit to lead their attack.

Leading scorer Angel missed last week’s defeat by Arsenal with a toe injury while Vassell, looking to maintain his push for a place in Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for the World Cup, came off at half-time against the Gunners with a calf problem.

Dion Dublin is likely to feature if one of the first choice Villa frontmen is ruled out. He scored in their 2-1 defeat by Arsenal.

Joining Town Chairman David Sheepshanks as his guest for the game will be former Belgian international Luc Nilis, whose career sadly came to an end in the corresponding fixture last season.

The striker suffered a double leg fracture after colliding with Richard Wright while playing for Villa in their 2-1 win at Portman Road last September.

Har limet inn statistikk & siste nytt om skadesituasjon over i to innlegg.

IPSWICH 0 ASTON VILLA 0

Ipswich slipped back into the Premiership bottom three after some inspired goalkeeping at both ends ensured a goalless draw at home to Aston Villa.

Town had the edge in terms of chances, only to be denied by veteran custodian Peter Schmeichel, while Matteo Sereni made two important late saves to earn the home side a share of the spoils.

Both sides hit the woodwork in the second half - ironically through the same player, Jim Magilton. His close-range shot was kept out by the post at the Villa end and in the final seconds his sliced headed clearance required a fine Sereni save to turn it against the bar and away to safety.

Ipswich boss George Burley was forced to make one change to the side which drew 2-2 at Newcastle last week with Sixto Peralta ruled out with a thigh strain, so Finidi George returned. Jermaine Wright passed a fitness test on a groin strain.

Villa were without Juan Pablo Angel, the man whose two goals won the match at Villa Park in December, while Hassan Kachloul, who chose Villa over Ipswich last summer, was also not in the 16 on duty.

Ipswich began well, forcing a corner in the first minute which Peter Schmeichel came to claim, and then Matt Holland tried his luck from just outside the box, but dragged his shot wide.

Town suffered an early injury blow when Chris Makin suffered a foot injury as he made a tackle on Darius Vassell. He tried to battle on but had to come off on ten minutes. Jim Magilton came on, with Jermaine Wright reverting to right-back.

Villa tried to take advantage as Town reorganised, and came close with a Vassell prodded shot straight at Sereni and then Dion Dublin headed wide from a volleyed Gareth Barry cross.

George tried his luck with a half volley from 20 yards after snapping up a loose ball, but the veteran Schmeichel was alive to the danger and dived to his right to keep it out.

There was panic in the Town defence on 15 minutes when Dublin flicked on a long throw from Thomas Hitzlsperger, but George Boateng could only get a weak connection and Matteo Sereni gratefull dived on the loose ball.

Ipswich had two great chances in the space of 60 seconds midway through the half as Schmeichel pulled off an excellent reaction save to deny Marcus Bent's volley from a Mark Venus corner and then when the ball was helped back into the danger zone, Bent didn't connect well and Schmeichel saved with ease.

Vassell fired well wide from distance before Dublin headed a Steve Stone cross wide also. A quick Villa break also had Town stretched but Wright did enough to put off Hitzlsperger as he came in to meet a Mark Delaney cross.

Another Venus corner caused flutters in the Villa defence on the half hour with Marcus Stewart flicking it on and John McGreal - on his 100th Town appearance - just unable to apply the final touch at the far post.

Another Villa break caused danger when Vassell's cross was lobbed back into the middle by Boateng. Town failed to clear well and it dropped to Dublin whose first time volley was into the new North Stand top tier.

George tried his luck from long range again as half-time approached, only for his shot to be deflected for a corner and the last chance of the half came when JLloyd Samuel got forward to cross for Dublin, who directed his header wide of the target.

It had been a tense first half with neither side able to grab the initiative, and Town will have been hoping to come out and take the game by the scruff of the neck after the interval.

Ipswich made a fast start to the second half with George trying his luck from 25 yards, but his shot hit Bent and deflected wide.

Villa went straight up the other end where Delaney sent over a cross and Dublin tried an overhead kick which wasn't too far wide, although Sereni appeared to have it covered.

Town had a great chance on 50 minutes when Clapham crossed from the left, George met it coming in from the right and fired the ball back across goal to an unmarked Stewart. The striker appeared to be surprised by the pace of the ball and his shot was heading wide before Schmeichel grabbed it anyway.

As the game grew in intensity both Dublin and Delany were booked for Villa, Dublin for the latest in a series of fouls, this one on George, before Delaney deliberately handled a Stewart through-ball.

The latter offence gave Ipswich a free-kick 25 yards out in a central position, and although Venus hit his effort with plenty of venom, he caught it off the outside of his boot and the shot flew well wide.

Ipswich and Stewart had another great chance on the hour when Wright's cross found him unmarked, but his stooping header was blocked by the legs of Schmeichel.

A minute later at the other end Hitzlsperger let fly with a powerful strike from the edge of the area which didn't miss the far post by much with Sereni flinging himself across goal but unable to get close to it.

Vassell's cross hit McGreal on the arm on 63 minutes and although the Villa fans appealed strongly for a penalty, there was little reaction from the visiting players, and referee David Pugh felt it was accidental.

Stewart raced clear onto a Bent pass but was flagged offside in what must have been a close call, and then Bent brought down a long McGreal pass and turned inside his man, but to the frustration of the crowd he opted to pass instead of shoot, but his rolled ball evaded both Stewart and Matt Holland.

Villa broke away three-on-two but Vassell's pass forced Boateng wide, his own poor touch sent him wider, and it made the Dutchman's eventual shot easy for Sereni to gather at the near post.

Town's came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock on 69 minutes when Clapham picked out George who played the ball into the middle. Magilton met it first time with a side-foot shot which Schmeichel blocked back to the Northern Ireland international, whose follow-up effort struck the post and rebounded to safety.

..........Sereni held a Dublin header just under the crossbar before Wright's cross found Bent on the penalty spot, but as he brought the ball down Delaney closed in to block his shot and send it out for a corner which Villa cleared.

Villa made a change with ten minutes left when Ian Taylor replaced Samuel and the visitors then had a great chance to snatch the win, when Boateng played in Vassell, but Sereni pulled off a superb reflex save from his low angled shot.

Boateng may have had a case for a penalty as McGreal knocked him over as he released his pass to Vassell, but Mr Pugh decided it was a 50-50 shoulder challenge.

Burley made his final two changes immediately after that escape with Martijn Reuser and Alun Armstrong replacing George and Stewart, who had both worked hard without having the luck to make the breakthrough.

Bent directed a powerful header straight at Schmeichel before a McGreal chip into the box saw Hermann Hreidarsson and Olof Mellberg challenging together, the defender doing enough to put the Icelander off and his effort flew wide.

The nerves were clear to see from Ipswich as the match entered the four minutes of stoppage time and with three of them gone, Hitzlsperger unleashed a tremendous 20-yard drive following Dublin's clever backheeled pass which Sereni leapt to touch over the bar.

If that was a good save he made an even better one from Barry's corner which Magilton inadvertently flicked on towards his own goal, but the Italian managed to stick up a hand and deflect the ball onto the bar, and Town managed to scramble the ball away.

TEAM (Played in 4-4-2 formation)
Sereni, Makin (sub Magilton, 10 minutes), McGreal, Venus, Hreidarsson, George (sub Reuser, 83 minutes)Wright, Holland, Clapham, M. Bent and Stewart (sub Armstrong, 83 minutes)

61. Zenden kommer inn for Stanic.
Venus skyter like utenfor på frispark.
66. Chelsea gjør to bytter. Gudjohnsen kommer inn for Forssell, mens Lampard erstatter Dalla Bona.
70. Darren Bent kommer inn for Marcus Bent.
71. Stewart kommer inn for Armstrong.
84. Clapham kommer inn for George.

Hadde vært stas å stikke kjepper i hjulene for Man.

BURLEY: WE CAN DO IT
George Burley has issued a rallying cry to his side ahead of Saturday’s visit to Bolton.

A victory at the Reebok Stadium will lift Town out of the bottom three and above the Trotters on goal difference and George says: “If we play at our best we can win the game.”

“If we do that we will go above them and that is psychologically very important.

“It is a very big game. We have five matches left and they are crucial to both clubs.

“It is going to be tense and competitive at the Reebok, with three points vital. There will be a cup final atmosphere.

“The result is everything now. I don’t know what Bolton will do, but we’re going to try and pick up the three points.”

CAMPBELL MISSES TOWN VISIT
Sol Campbell will miss Town’s visit to Highbury next Sunday after picking up a hamstring injury in his club’s FA Cup Semi-Final win over Middlesbrough yesterday.

The England international was stretchered off after 60 minutes at Old Trafford as the Gunners booked their place at the Millennium Stadium with a 1-0 victory over the Riverside club.

Campbell was immediately pulled out of the England squad for this week’s game against Paraguay and the news from Highbury this morning is that the former Spurs defender is expected to be out of action for around three weeks.

Town’s game at Highbury on April 21 kicks-off at 4.00pm and will be shown live on Sky TV.

ARSENAL V TOWN PREVIEW
George Burley is still optimistic that Town can win their battle to stay in the Premiership.

The Blues’ escape bid has not been helped by the results today with both Fulham and Blackburn picking up away wins and Bolton getting a draw with Tottenham.

Sunderland are now the club looking anxiously over their shoulders with their 3-0 defeat at West Ham leaving them five points clear of Town but having played two games more.

“We don’t need a miracle. We are capable of staying in the Premiership but we must play at our maximum over the remaining four games and have some luck along the way,” says George.

“There is still a belief in the squad that we can stay up and we will go to Highbury confident that we can get something from the game.

“If we can get to 40 points it will give us a chance of beating the drop but to do that we must be consistent.

“We have performed well in one-offs but not often enough. But we are not going to hide from the fact we have not played well this season.

“No club has a divine right to play in the Premiership. You have to earn it and that is what we have to do over the next four games.”

Town will give a late fitness test to Mark Venus, who has been struggling with a knee injury.

Fabian Wilnis and Sixto Peralta have both returned to training and will be available but Matteo Sereni, Jermaine Wright, Chris Makin and Thomas Gaardsoe are all missing from the squad because of injury.

Former Town ‘keeper Richard Wright looks set to start on the bench for Arsenal, David Seaman returning to goal.

Robert Pires is out of action for six months after deciding on surgery to cure his knee ligament injury, Sol Campbell and Sylvain Wiltord will also miss tomorrow’s match with hamstring problems.

Arsenal will have Ashley Cole and Francis Jeffers available though and will need a win to take them back to the top of the Premiership after Liverpool and Manchester United jumped above them following victories today.

The game kicks-off at 4.00pm at Highbury and will be shown live on Sky TV.
